Things we're often asked about
Depending on the severity of the leak, turning off the water may be necessary. For instance if water is coming through your ceiling then the first thing you should do is turn it off at the stop cock to avoid any further major damage.
If it’s a small leak that you can keep contained by allowing it to drip into a bucket until a plumber can get to you, then it may not be necessary.
There’s a number of ways to locate a leak in your home. Firstly try checking the obvious culprits – the taps. If you’ve got a constant drip, or the pipes underneath have come loose, then it’s like you’ve found the leak.
Toilets can be a little harder to detect leaks in. One handy trick is to try putting a little food colouring in the cistern and seeing if it leaks through into the bowl. If it does, you’ve got a constantly running toilet and that probably means you need a new flapper.
Leaks that are coming from the ceiling will likely be quite obvious where they are coming from but are most likely to need help from a professional to resolve.
If you have a problem with a blocked internal drain, for instance if water from the sink, bath or shower is slow draining away, the best thing to use is a good old fashioned plunger.
Avoid using chemial drain clearers because not only are they expensive but they can cause damage to your pipes.
A leaking tap can be caused by a number potential problems. Incorrect installation when the tap was replaced, wronge sized washer, worn out washer, sediment build-up inside the tap or faulty o-rings in the handle.
With the right tools, many people can fix their own leaking tap but if you prefer to get in a professional get in touch using our enquiry form and we’ll get you booked in.
A running toilet is basically an internal water leak which means the internal parts in the tank need checking as it’s likely that they are causing this to happen. Don’t ignore this problem, because a running toilet could be wasting a significant amount of water each running up your water bill.
Things you can check are:
- toilet flapper – is there sign of decay or cracks
- chain length – is it stopping the toilet flapper from sealing properly
- float ball and float arm – are they working correctly.
If you are unable to resolve the problem yourself then get in touch and book an appointment.
